Transition Chelmsford - Current Projects
Transition Chelmsford currently has several live projects (and lots of ideas!). Please see the individual pages for further details.
TTC Allotment
Transistion Chelmsford rents a standard ten rod plot at the Avon Road site where we gather as a community to grow food using low maintenance/low impact methods. The food produced is distributed amongst the volunteers and members of TTC.
We have just reached the end of our first full year on the site and have got over half the plot under cultivation. We intend to get the rest of the plot productive by spring of next year, with a considerable proportion set aside for fruit, as well as building an upcycled shed.
The long term aim is to encourage more people to get involved with growing their own food and to explore a variety of crops and techniques which may not be familiar to the volunteers/other allotment holders.
Local Food
Transition Chelmsford aims to encourage the growth of a local food economy. Our first project in this domain is the production of a local food map and the organization of a local food day as part of the Ideas Festival.
Apple Waste Action
We are looking into the issue of food waste by starting to address one of the most common wasted resources in our climate - the humble apple. There are numerous examples of apple trees where the produce is not used, often being left to rot where it drops from the tree. We wish to make use of this free resource (and encourage others to do so). Several ways exist to exploit this harvest i.e drying, juicing and fermenting and we are building low energy devices to assist with this.
The longer term aims include mapping these unexploited fruit (not just apples) resources and the use our constructed devices in an educational role.
School Allotments
Transition volunteers have been working with the PTA in rescuing the Lawford Mead school allotments from neglect. The intention is to bring them back to a position where they can be used as an educational resource.
Timebank
The transition timebank project is no longer active, however there is a now another timebank initiative in Chelmsford managed by CVS. We recomend anyone interested becomes a member there.
